Off the bat we should say that if you’re buying a mic to podcast, the MXL R144 may not be your best bet because ribbon mics generally have a lower output volume, so you might be better off with a condenser or dynamic mic. That said, the MXL R144 is still a great mic and here are our three reasons for buying it:
Swagger & style — The MXL R144 is a beautiful mic with all the trimmings and swagger of the vintage ribbon mics of a bygone radio era. If you’re a great admirer of broadcasting you’ll love this mic for the visual tribute it pays to the magnificent artform.
Incredible sound — Ribbon mics have a reputation for delivering a wonderfully rich and warm sound and the MXL R144 does nothing to spoil that good name. As we mentioned above, the mic may not be perfectly suited to podcasting, but if you’re recording anything that needs a mic capable of capturing a silky smooth sound, go no further.
Affordability — The <$100 price-point makes this an extremely affordable ribbon mic, which definitely packs a serious performance punch relative to its cost. If you need a ribbon mic and you don’t want to pay a fortune, there’s few better than the MXL R144.

Podcasting attracts millions of intelligent, passionate, and thoughtful listeners from around the world. To ensure WhatPods continues to grow into a community that serves only the best crowdsourced podcast endorsements, we make it a little difficult to endorse — it’s a filter that ensures only the best get through.
A community lives and dies by its members. To ensure WhatPods survives, we work hard to ensure only real people, with real podcast opinions, join and contribute. Sorry, Botty McBot.
