Shure is one of the stalwarts of the gear landscape and the SM7B is one of its flagship, high-end microphones. The mic famously used by Marc Maron and Joe Rogan, you’re guaranteed to get a great sound, even if the price is a little steep. Here are our top three reasons to buy:
Performance — As with all things, you get what you pay for and with the SM7B what you pay for is an extremely capable, stunningly sounding mic. The price might exclude some, but those with the budget for it will be very happy with their purchase.
Durability & reliability — Shure is one of the leading global recording equipment brands and the SM7B has quality manufacturing baked into its DNA. In other words, when you buy the SM7B you’re making a very sound, long-term investment.
Cardioid polar pattern — Perfect for podcasters, the SM7B’s cardioid polar pattern makes it the perfect broadcaster’s microphone, picking up your voice without any of the unwanted background noises.

I chose the SM7B for it’s durability, long standing as a mic of choice in the radio/broadcast/podcast industry, and being a close-proximity dynamic mic. The great thing about that is I can record a podcast in a relatively noisy coffee shop and, so long as we talk firmly and have our mouths right up on the mics, the background noise will be much quieter than our vocals. The only downside I’ve found to this mic is it’s low gain output, which is why I use the CloudLifter with it.
I use the Shure SM7B and I’d definitely give it a full ten out of ten. It’s expensive but the sound is incredible. It’s nearly impossible to blow out, the internal shock-absorber is so good that bumping the mic with my hand makes almost no sound, most background noise is minimal, and I rarely get mouth clicks. The mic is a lot quieter than other mics but easy to adjust to. Also if you keep the mic about a hand width or two away, you will not pickup breathing sounds. Highly recommended investment.
My choice for elevating the sound of The Secret Room was to upgrade to the Shure SM7B, a cardioid, dynamic mic. I haven't looked back. It's an industry standard, tried and true studio mic designed for vocals. And it performs. Vocals are warm with just enough brightness to make the sound of your voice dance out of the speakers. It's got electromagnetic shielding that reduces hum in case you're near a computer. It is excellent at rejecting background noise and focusing primarily on the vocal. There are a lot of good choices for studio mics, but you won't go wrong with the Shure SM7B.
I use the Shure SM7B as my go to mic for any vocal. From soft vocals to screaming death metal growls. Just plug in and go. They’re even great as drum overheads. Any serious producer or engineer should own one.
